La Psychologie des Froussards et des Opprimés

Nous avons besoin de meilleures personnes

Most people believe that crime is due to a small number of criminals, and that the vast majority of people are innocent.

Are most people "innocent"?
Are there only a few criminals?

However, most crimes requires lots of customers and assistants. For example, many of the stolen automobiles are for resale, not for use by the criminal who stole it. Many of the items that are stolen in burglaries are also for resale.

Government corruption does not always require customers, but it requires a lot of people to suppress attempts to expose the corruption, such as by ridiculing the "conspiracy nuts", spreading deceptive information, and distracting people with trivial issues.

The people who purchase stolen items and the people who suppress attempts to expose the crimes are not truly "innocent" because they are assisting the criminals. These people could be described as accessories to the crimes.

I suspect there are a lot of criminals,
and most people are assisting criminals.

Involuntary criminals

Most of the people who assist crimes do not realize that they are accessories to the crimes. Most of these people are like my own family members. Specifically, they are emotionally unable to deal with the problems we face. They suppress attempts to expose crimes simply because they suffer from some type of emotional disorder.

Rather than refer to them as "accessories to the crime", which implies they deliberately assist the crimes, they could be described as "inadvertent criminals" or "involuntary criminals". I suppose government officials refer to these people as "useful idiots".

High crimes levels require crummy citizens

The level and type of crime in a nation is a reflection of its citizens. If the American people were truly the greatest people in the world, a lot of the crime would cease due to a lack of customers, and because crimes would be exposed quickly by the citizens.

An example is the issue of the CIA selling cocaine. If the CIA is truly selling drugs, they are causing problems for the entire world by supporting criminal networks, corrupt governments, murders, gun smuggling, money laundering, and dishonest bank officials. They would also be indirectly causing the deaths of lots of policemen, immigration officials, and other people.

However, the CIA could not sell drugs unless there was a large number of customers for their drugs, and a large number of bank officials, professors, military officials, magazine editors, policemen, and government officials willing to ignore or assist the corruption, and a large number of inadvertent criminals who suppress attempts to expose the crime. Therefore, if you are going to complain about the dealing of drugs by the CIA, why not also complain about all the people who directly or indirectly assist the CIA?

People who assist crimes are considered to be "normal" citizens, rather than criminals, but if you were a victim of crime, you might not feel that way.

For an example, imagine that Jeffrey Dahmer is living in your neighborhood, and every few weeks he kills and eats one of your friends or family members. Imagine that the police and television news reporters know about the crimes, but even they are too emotionally weak to deal with it, so they ignore it. The banking officials also know, but they do not want to lose Jeffrey Dahmer's bank account, so they say nothing. When you try to have Dahmer arrested, Dahmer's lawyers interfere because they realize they can make more money by protecting Dahmer than by stopping him. When you post documents on the Internet that expose Dahmer's killings, the magazines Scientific American and Popular Mechanics publish articles that support Dahmer. Finally, imagine that your friends and neighbors ridicule you as a conspiracy nut, or ignore you.

If such a situation were to happen to you, would you complain that Dahmer is a criminal? Or would you be asking yourself, "What is wrong with the majority of people?"

Why not apply this same concept to the September 11 attack and other scams? Specifically, why not ask yourself:

"How can so many professors, policemen, firemen, military people, magazine editors, and citizens allow a handful of criminals to create so much chaos and suffering? What is wrong with the majority of people?"

The attack on Nancy Kerrigan

Nancy Kerrigan was hit in the leg at an ice skating competition. Shane Stant was eventually caught, and he told the FBI that Tonya Harding's husband hired him to hit Kerrigan. Tonya Harding was never convicted of involvement, but many people suspect that she at least knew about it since her husband had arranged for it.

Some Americans reacted to the attack on Kerrigan by feeling sorry for Tonya Harding. Her web site (TonyaHarding.com) lets people post messages, and many are of sympathy. The pity for Tonya Harding is often based on her childhood. Two examples:

  • "I find myself feeling great pity for Tonya.... Coming from the wrong side of the tracks myself..."

  •
  • "I think Tonya Harding comes from a messed up background. I feel sorry for her."

  • A lot of people assume that the attack on Kerrigan was because Tonya Harding and her friends grew up in poor neighborhoods, and because their parents did not provide a nice life for the children. By comparison, Nancy Kerrigan came from a more normal family.

Life is more difficult for an Underdog

A lot of children start life from a disadvantaged position. Some are born in poor families, some have genetic defects, and some are victims of abusive parents. Other children start off with incredible advantages, such as our President George Bush. He was given special treatment simply because of the family he was born into.

The children who start life at a disadvantage are often referred to as "Underdogs". It is much more difficult for an Underdog to become President of America compared to a "privileged" child. However, there is nothing to stop an Underdog from becoming a respectable member of society and setting up a happy life for himself.

Unfortunately, some Underdogs end up committing crimes, or they have trouble maintaining stable friendships or marriages, or they develop alcohol or gambling problems. They may blame their problems on their miserable childhood, but there is a point at which an adult has to take responsibility for his life and stop justifying his terrible behavior on his crummy childhood.

If we allow adults to blame their bad behavior on their childhood we will encourage more bad behavior because it allows everybody from a poor neighborhood to justify their crimes with remarks such as,

"Well, I grew up in a lousy neighborhood, so what do you expect?"

Furthermore, there are people who grew up in the same miserable neighborhoods that the criminals come from, but they ended up as respectable members of society. Those people prove that even a child with a lousy environment can become a happy, respectable person. On page 152 of my book I point out that Linus Pauling is an example of a person who started life with a lot of disadvantages, but he ended up becoming a respectable member of society.

    Pity does not help anybody

When Americans give pity to Underdogs, they encourage people to feel sorry for themselves rather than encourage them deal with their problems. Children should be taught that even if they start life with disadvantages, there is nothing stopping them from becoming respectable people.

It is certainly true that a child who grows up in an environment of crime, corruption, fighting, and gangs will be more likely to consider such behavior "normal". For example, some children who grew up in families where incest was common have mentioned that they assumed incest was a normal part of family life, and not until they were older did they discover the truth.

It is understandable when a young girl considers it normal to have sex with her father if she grew up with incest. And it is understandable when a child considers shoplifting to be normal if he grew up around parents who shoplift.

However, as children become adults, they should occasionally look at their attitudes, their clothing styles, and the manner in which they talk to and treat people. They should notice that some of the attitudes they picked up during their childhood are inappropriate.

It is possible that Tonya Harding's husband grew up around so much crime, violent Hollywood movies, gangs, steroid use by athletes, and corruption among the judges in sports events that he considered the attack on Nancy Kerrigan to be normal behavior in such important sports contests.

However, even if his behavior was due to the terrible environment he grew up in, pity will not make him or anybody else a better person, nor will it stop future crimes.

The environment a child grows up in will affect his attitude. Therefore, it is important to create a better environment to raise children. However, that requires stopping the crime, not feeling sorry for the people who do it. Children should develop the attitude that crime is an undesirable aberration, not an ordinary part of sporting events, political contests, and everyday life.

The two largest groups of Americans seem to be the Liberals and the Conservatives. Most of the people who call themselves Liberals believe that the solution to crime is to feel sorry for criminals, and most of the people who call themselves Conservatives believe that the solution is to hurt the criminal with jail, torture, or death. Neither group has done anything to reduce crime or help us understand why it occurs.

The issues we face are much more complicated than the common people are making them appear. We need more intelligent people in control of the world.

What is "Poverty"? What is Wealth?

If our ancestors from a few hundred years ago could see the poor neighborhoods of today, they would never realize that the people were suffering from "poverty". The poorest neighborhoods of America are luxurious beyond their wildest dreams. Our ancestors would be astounded by the electricity, the glass windows, the wide variety of foods available every day of the year, the kitchens, and furniture. A lot of our ancestors would gladly suffer from such poverty.

The people a thousand years in the future will certainly look at the most wealthy neighborhoods of today as being incredibly primitive. Does that mean that Bill Gates, George Soros, and George Bush are suffering from poverty but are too stupid to realize it?

The only sensible explanation is that poverty is a concept; a perspective; an attitude; a figment of your imagination. Whether you are suffering from poverty or enjoying your wealth depends on how you want to look at life. Life is miserable if you want it to be, or it is wonderful. It depends entirely on your mind.

Some of the people in poor neighborhoods drink excessively, abuse their spouse or children, and commit crimes. However, their bad behavior is not due to their lack of money. Giving them money or pity will not transform them into happy, productive members of society.

Some people in rich neighborhoods also drink excessively, abuse their spouse or children, and commit crimes. Giving pity to the rich people will not help them, either.

The only alcoholics and criminals who have become better people are the ones who could face their problems and do the hard work of changing their attitudes and behavior.

Bad attitudes are the problem, not poverty

Whether anybody in America is "poor" is a personal opinion. I think all Americans are very wealthy. The Americans who whine about their low income could be enjoying their incredible wealth and this beautiful universe, but they have chosen to consider themselves poor, and they have chosen to waste their life pouting and hating.

A common attitude in America is that ignorance, crime, alcoholism, and divorce are the result of poverty, and that the solution to this problem is to end poverty, usually with welfare, pity, or some form of handout.

The opposite makes more sense. Specifically, ignorance, crime, alcoholism, and divorce can create poverty. Solving these problems is not easy. We need better school systems, a respectable government, and better behaved citizens.

The poor neighborhoods are often ugly and full of trash, but that is not because the people are poor. Rather, it is because so many of them waste their time and money pouting, hating, drinking, fighting, gambling, and watching TV. They are poor because of their terrible behavior.

The reason life in a poor neighborhood is so miserable is because of the people who live there, not because of the lack of material items. Many of the people in those neighborhoods are neurotic, uneducated, stupid, or retarded. They are ruining their lives, and they are making life miserable for the children in their neighborhood.

Many of the people in poor neighborhoods do not have jobs, so they have plenty of time to clean up the trash, plants gardens, and arrange dinners and social affairs. Instead, they drink, fight, watch television, and pout. The miserable qualities of a poor neighborhood are due to the crummy minds of the people who live there. It has nothing to do with their lack of money.

Tonya Harding could have become an inspiration to the "Trailer Trash" children. She had a talent for ice-skating that was far beyond what most people have, and she could have enjoyed it. But her husband, some of her friends, and possibly even herself, ruined an incredible opportunity.

The attack on Nancy Kerrigan is more evidence that many of the people who live in poor neighborhoods are in their miserable situations because of their undesirable minds.

Many poor people complain that they do not have opportunities, but everybody has opportunities. However, many people have mental disorders that cause them to ruin or ignore their opportunities.

Giving pity to people who behave badly will not make them behave in a better manner. Rather, it encourages them to pout and hate.

One of the most self-destructive attitudes in America is that we can help the Underdogs by giving them pity. The only way to help people through education and training. We can only help people to help themselves.

I mentioned that Linus Pauling is an example of how a child in a bad situation can become a respectable member of society. There is a woman who makes an even more incredible example, assuming that what she says is true. That woman is Cathy O'Brien. If she is telling the truth, she has gone though more abuse than most people would even dream possible. However, one of the reasons it is difficult to believe her is that if you have the chance to meet her, you will find that she is so adorable that you can't stop wondering to yourself, "If this woman is telling the truth, why is she not the least bit bitter or angry? Why is she so happy?"

The common attitude in America is that a child who grows up around crime and abuse will become a miserable criminal. This attitude is one reason people doubt that Cathy O'Brien is telling the truth. It is assumed that any woman as adorable as she must have been raised by rich parents, sent to special schools, and pampered by servants.

Lousy environments certainly can give children bad attitudes, but there is nothing stopping them from getting rid of those bad attitudes as they grow up.

When you justify crime by saying the criminal grew up in a bad environment, you are encouraging pouting and more crime, which will make the situation worse. People should be told that even if they did grow up in a bad situation, there is nothing stopping them from improving themselves, becoming respectable members of society, and enjoying life.

What you become depends upon your own mind. Don't blame your terrible behavior on a lack of money, or because you parents were crummy.

Bad behavior is tolerable in small quantities

If you think I am making the attack on Nancy Kerrigan more important than it really is, the only reason that the attack seems trivial is because it does not happen very often. There are a lot of things that people do that seem insignificant when only one out of 10 million people do them. But the same behavior is horrible when large numbers of people do them.

For example, imagine if the majority of athletes were hiring people to attack their competitors. Imagine if prior to every football game, basketball game, ice skating competition, and Olympic contest, the majority of athletes dropped out because they were hit in the leg with a stick.

And how you would feel if people were doing this to each other as they applied for jobs? How would you feel if somebody hits you with a stick every time you were on your way to a job interview?

Or imagine if almost everybody was abandoning items in supermarkets and other retail stores. Would you dismiss such behavior as insignificant when it happens on a large scale?

    Are Americans clever? Or dishonest?

Years ago I heard a woman announce that she is proud of her mother. People gathered around her to listen to her story. She told us that her mother bought a toaster a year earlier from a department store. After using the toaster for a year, she decided to pretend it was defective and take it back to the store in order to get a new toaster. This woman was proud that her mother got a new toaster for free.

In case you assume that her mother was struggling to afford food, you should know that she was wealthier than the average American.

I was expecting people to criticize her when she was finished with her story, but I was amazed to discover the other people considered her mother to be "clever". It seems that most Americans believe that when you cheat a department store, you are "clever" rather than a "criminal".

Imagine this happening on a very large scale. Imagine every American citizen purchasing items and then a year later lying to get a free replacement.

A lot of people justify their cheating of corporations on the grounds that the corporations are evil entities. However, if the American people were the moral, intelligent people they claim to be, they would discuss the problems we face and try to improve our situation.

I agree that corporations are dominated by neurotic people who foolishly believe that money is going to make them happy, but committing criminal acts is not going to make the nation better.

Some people think they are clever for stealing hotel towels, or utensils from restaurants, or books from the public library. Imagine if everybody did this.

There is no perfect solution to crime

If we stand up to the people who steal hotel towels, refuse to put items back at supermarkets, or commit other "trivial" crimes, we are accused of being cruel. But if we permit this type of behavior, we encourage more crimes, and more bad attitudes.

There is no perfect solution to crime because no matter what we do, lots of people are going to be upset by it.

America is infested with bad behavior

There are frequent accusations of corruption in sporting events. The attack on Nancy Kerrigan is unusual only because it was such a crude method of cheating. The more intelligent people arrange for judges to be bribed, or they arrange for a friend to become a judge, or they use drugs to boost their performance, or they use psychological techniques to annoy their competitors.

Many athletes are aware of the corruption in sports, and some of them come to the conclusion that since other athletes are cheating, they have to cheat in order to maintain equality with their competitors. For example, many athletes justify their use of performance enhancing drugs by pointing out that other athletes are doing it. Those particular athletes are more evidence that when we who ignore crimes, we are allowing the situation to get worse.

Many people complained about the attack on Nancy Kerrigan, but who complained about the other the people who cheat in sports events? The message to athletes is that nobody cares about the cheating as long as it is subtle. What type of message is this?

Years ago when I first heard about an athlete taking drugs to boost his performance, my attitude was, "So What?" A lot of crimes seem trivial when we focus on one, individual crime. We have to look at the effect a crime has on other people and on the future.

The same concept applies to people who behave badly. For example, parents who abandon items at supermarkets and retail stores are not violating any law, but their children might pick up the attitude that the behavior is acceptable.

Furthermore, other people's children might also pick up that attitude simply by observing it. Those children might respond, "But everybody else is doing it!" when their parents complain about their bad behavior.

If the American people were the responsible, moral people they claim to be, children would be picking up good attitudes from the wonderful adults. Instead, raising children in America is raising children in a gigantic jail that is lacking supervision. Parents have to spend a lot of time trying to remove the crummy attitudes their kids pick up from other prisoners.

    We need better people

An automobile is whatever the engineers make it. If the engineers are crummy, the automobile will be crummy. Conversely, if engineers are the most talented in the world, they will create the best automobile.

Your life is whatever you make it. If your mind is crummy, your life will be crummy. Conversely, if you are the most intelligent person on the planet, your life will be the best managed.

A nation is whatever the people make it. If the people are dishonest, mentally ill, hypocritical, selfish, and violent, they will make a crummy, violent, crime-ridden society. Conversely, if the people are the greatest people in the world, their nation will be the greatest nation.

Why does America have so much crime, corruption, and slavery? Why is America resisting the metric system? Why do the American people spend so much money on gambling, alcohol, drugs, and other forms of entertainment, and so little money on anything useful? Why is the leadership in America so incompetent and corrupt? Why are our news reports so stupid and deceptive? Why do so many Americans have intense cravings for wealth and fame? Why are so many Americans willing to manipulate children for the purpose of increasing corporate profits?

Millions of Americans are trying desperately to find some group of people to blame the nation's problems on. There are millions of Americans insisting that our problems are due to liberals, Republicans, Jews, blacks, or Mexicans.

The only way America will be able improve is when it faces the fact that its problems are coming from its own people. America is a victim of the majority of Americans.

Some of the people who came to America were respectable and were simply looking for a new life, but most of them are just like the Statue of Liberty describes them: the Wretched Refuse; the Huddled Masses; the Trailer Trash. We must stop pretending that the immigrants to America were the best people of Europe. We have to face the fact that most Americans have serious mental disorders.

From what I have seen in other countries, the majority of people in every nation are suffering from mental disorders. Badly behaved people are not unique to America.

The world will not improve from people who hate, feel sorry for themselves, or who selfishly think of their personal income. We will create a better life for ourselves only after we get better leadership, and better behaved citizens. We need citizens who are willing to help make a better society and a better world.
